Weather station on the plateau
The Hochvernagtplateau (HVP) station at around 3470 m elevation was installed at the highest accumulation area of the Vernagtferner in 2018. The station is used to examine the snow cover evolution in detail. For this purpose, a specially designed radar device was installed in the firn body. This radar provides information about the overlying snow pack at a very high resolution and enables the water equivalent of the individual layers to be determined. In addition, the snow depth is continuously monitored by an ultrasonic sensor, as well as the basic meteorological parameters air temperature, humidity and wind.
